Whether on the astronomical, human or subatomic scale, scientific instruments allow us to discover new facets of our world. The next generation of advanced detectors will produce an enormous amount of data, equivalent to 500 HD movies every second, far too much for current systems.

Audrey Corbeil Therrien, holder of the Canada Research Chair in embedded real-time intelligence for ultrafast flow detectors, wants to design intelligent microsystems to process, interpret and compress this data locally and in real time, reducing hardware and energy required to transmit and store this data. The innovations produced by Ms. Corbeil Therrien and her team can be integrated into other detector technologies, particularly for industry, autonomous vehicles, medical equipment and aerospace.
